OMG!!! You liar! GMOs have NEVER been tested for safety on humans and when tested for safety on animals, have shown consistently to do harm.

The FDA were successfully lobbied by the big biotech companies years ago who argued wrongly that GMOs were not significantly different from their conventional counterparts. It's on the basis of this enduring deception that people are eating monstrous foods that should have been tested for safety decades ago.

...By who's council are you spouting this rubbish I wonder.

Oh dear sysa, seems you don't understand very much about GM crops. One example should get you off on the right foot:

Genetically modified Roundup Ready soy has been engineered to withstand a large amount of toxic Roundup (glyphosate) herbicide. Because this crop has been developed to withstand (not perish by) this particularly nasty chemical, it means the farmers spray LOADS on it, FAR more than they would if it were a conventional crop. You are ingesting shocking amounts of glyphosate herbicide, thanks to Monsanto and its Roundup Ready soy.

Other lovely Monsanto creations mean you are eating crops that naturally produce insectide, and which continue to do so inside your gut, turning your intestines into a pesticide factory. Don't believe me? Start here:

...and then follow your nose.

As several posters have already noted, there's no clinical evidence to validate the dangers associate the dangers of GM foods. At the same time, it's hard not to feel slightly uneasy about them, especially when you have a company with a long history of questionable ethics and tactics (*cough* Monsanto *cough*) so deeply involved in the development of them.

As usual, there's no simple answer here; an exploding population means we need crops that yield more, and are more resistant to pests, drought, etc. Organically grown groups simply can't compete. Short of cultivating the moon or mandating birth control, I don't see we have much of a choice in the long run.

Of course, that doesn't mean I have to like it.

You need to do more research. Sounds like your opinion is based on what you personally think is the truth rather than what is. You need to understand who Monsanto is. And by that I mean how they manipulate data which clearly shows that their experiments are bad for consumption. You have people who work for Monsanto who then go work for the FDA and over see Monsanto and "ensure" that all regulations are met. The two are interchangeable. You need to study more.

I'm ten years old and I understand completely.
They should not genetically modify our food. my mom has a tomato garden and i think that they
taste considerably better than than the ones we buy at the grocery store. You have to be so
careful nowadays about where you buy your food.

You have to be so careful now what you buy and who you trust. I don't trust genetically modified foods but how many companies and supermarkets are being entirely honest with you about what you're buying? I think it's out of our hands, to an extent. Best thing is to grow a lot of your own foods or find a grocer with a passion for natural foods.

I'm very interested: can someone please cite a peer-reviewed article demonstrating harmfulness of GM food? There's just too much apparently unfounded opinion flying in both directions at this point...

The term GM foods or GMOs (genetically-modified organisms) is most commonly used to refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular biology techniques. These plants have been modified in the laboratory to enhance desired traits such as increased resistance to herbicides or improved nutritional content. The enhancement of desired traits has traditionally been undertaken through breeding, but conventional plant breeding methods can be very time consuming and are often not very accurate.

First, I just want to say that I support the research of GM foods, both benefits and any harmful side effects that may occur. However, I do NOT believe that articles being published on the "harmful" side-effects of GM foods are helping anything. Making broad, sweeping accusations on the harmful qualities of genetic modification simply scares people away from supporting research which could one day lead to the creation of a crop with the capability to end world hunger or cure cancer.

As soon as the first human learned that planting two apple trees with large fruit next to each other caused the offspring of the trees to produce even larger fruit, genetically modified fruit was being consumed. Yes, it has taken huge leaps and bound forward as science advanced, (remember the flavrsavr tomatoes?) however, I find it INCREADABLE hard to believe that the FDA would allow a product to be distributed on a national scale if it caused all the side effects that you claim. If you look hard enough, almost anything is bad for you. Drinking too much water, pure, untainted water, will kill you. As will any non GM food, if you happen to be allergic to it. There is no scientific proof that GM foods are harmful to your health and there IS proof that it can be good for you. Golden rice is one example. The rice can be considered a particular advantage to poor people in underdeveloped countries. They eat only an extremely limited diet lacking in the essential bodily vitamins, causing many people to die or become blind. This is particularly true in areas of Asia, where most of the population live on rice from morning to evening. Golden rice has been genetically modified to contain extra Beta Carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. Vitamin A plays a role in a variety of functions throughout the body, such as:
•	Vision
•	Gene Transcription
•	Immune Function
•	Embryonic Development and Reproduction
•	Bone Metabolism
•	Haematopoiesis
•	Skin Health
•	Reducing Risk of Heart Disease and Cancer
•	Antioxidant Activity
Additionally, reasearch into GM foods is benifiting the world of medicen as well, helping researcers discover new sources of treatment for a whole varitey of illnesses. The advantages they offer in terms of production scale and economy, product safety, ease of storage and distribution cannot be matched by any current commercial system; they also provide the most promising opportunity to supply low-cost drugs and vaccines to the developing world. However, despite the promised benefits, the commercialization of plant-derived pharmaceutical products is overshadowed by the uncertain regulatory terrain, particularly with regard to the adaptation of good manufacturing practice regulations to field-grown plants. The success of such products also depends on careful negotiation of the intellectual property landscape, particularly the achievement of freedom-to-operate licenses for use in developing countries. There are at least 119 plant-derived compounds used in medicine today, including but not limited to analgesics, (aspirin,) taxol, (treatment for cancer,) L-dopa, (treatments for Parkinson’s,)m and so on. Additionally, using plants as a way of manufacturing pharmaceuticals can significantly cut production costs, making the treatments more available to the general public. Why you would want o take away an opportunity like this I will never understand.
I believe that you should fully research a topic before mouthing off about it, and if, after researching both viewpoints and com ing to your own conclusion not moticvated by fear but by eduacation, you still decide that GM foods just aren’t for you, then I encourage you to persue whatever lifestyle you chose.

If you have experienced starvation, you would rather eat GM food than die of starvation. When you live in a rich country like USA, food supply is abundant, you can pick and choose. You too are wasting tons of food. Please look at the under preveledged people. Anything that is edible is God send. Please don't be self-centered, open your eyes and look at millions of people still suffering from hunger.

"There are no animal genes in plant crops."
Terri L. Lomax Ph.D. Professor of Botany & Plant Pathology at OSU

The only place that animal genes are crossed with plant genes is in labs.

"These genetically engineered crops are actually the most highly tested crops that we've ever had. They're regulated by the EPA, the USDA, and the FDA. The EPA regulates them if there's a pesticide involved. The USDA for where they're grown and how it will effect the environment and the FDA for food safety. They go through millions of dollars worth of testing and many years to be able to be approved as a commercial crop."
Terri L. Lomax Ph.D. Professor of Botany & Plant Pathology at OSU

"We can't start getting picky because we've got enough food, that's just self-centered and racist. Unless you and yours are starving, you need, to shut, the f*ck, up."
Penn Jillette

Just those quotes and my little snippet say what I wanted to convey.

They go through millions of dollars worth of testing and many years to be able to be approved as a commercial crop.”

“We can’t start getting picky because we’ve got enough food, that’s just self-centered and racist. Unless you and yours are starving, you need, to shut, the f*ck, up.”

I like how this article actually makes me want to eat more GM foods. If you have no basis on what you are going to post here then you have no case and no threat. I thought i was going to read an article finally explaining the dangers of GM food, but you defended your ideas with non-trusty resources and what may as well be a total lack of knowledge. You boast about something that is pretty much pointless.

well. i think anyone who's actually afraid of genetic engineering is foolish. of course it has cultural implications, but that really makes you sound like the vatican telling galileo he was wrong until they were ready to tell the people.

this technology CAN end a great deal of human suffering by providing cheap, germ and insect resistant(which REDUCES PESTICIDE USE) plants which grow much larger and in harsher conditions.

forget eating a fruit fly's genes. that's nothing. how about a strawberry flavored banana? square watermelon anyone? subzero - growth tomato that tastes like steak?!

grow up, be open minded, the only way the technology will ever get better in the society we have is if people demand it.

gtfo there and demand it.
