The Best Health Insurance is the Food You Eat

let food be your medicine

It was about 2 years ago when I graduated from college and was dropped from my parents’ health insurance plan. Since then, I’ve be uninsured… well, at least in the typical fashion of paying $250 bucks per months for a policy. I gave that a shot for a month, but cancelled the insurance after a second thought. So now what am I to do? Good question since most people in America live without insurance — especially people like me in their mid-twenties.

A few weeks after I was dropped from my parents’ insurance, my younger brother who has been a raw foodist for years, said something that really resonated with me.

He said:

“My food is my health insurance. What I eat is the only insurance that I need. That’s why I don’t think about spending a lot of money on good food, because in the long-run I’ll save much more money on the hospital bills as a result of disease and poor health from eating horrible food.”

I couldn’t agree with him more. I’m not saying screw your health insurance plan. No, not at all. Heck, you can break your arm tomorrow and have plenty of medical bills to pay. What I am saying is, you need to understand that the foods you eat play a major role in your health, which has a direct correspondence with the amount of time you spend at the doctor’s office or in a hospital bed.

Wake up people!

Do you think pound of bacon with a side of beef and french fries soak in hydrogenated oil is actually going to keep you healthy? If so, you’re dreaming my friend.

The food we eat is a corollary of the health in our lives. To few, this is a simple notion. To many, this isn’t even a consideration and their health continues to deteriorate little by little as they tell themselves

“I’m living in the now and not worrying about the future. I only live once and it can all be over tomorrow if I get hit by a bus. So why shouldn’t I eat this food, that I know, is unhealthy but yummy?”

I feel you. I really do. Living in the now is great. But lend some time think about the future. The future of you bedridden, sick, diseased. The future of you preparing to get your third bypass surgery while your children or grandchildren are praying for you, crying, at your bedside. The future of leaving behind children because you died of high blood pressure and cancer way before your time.

When you juxtapose that future with your “now,” does that change your perspective on what you’re putting in your mouth just a tiny bit? Food really is your ultimate health insurance. You are what you eat. Your body is what you eat. Your mind what you eat.

So educate yourself. Consider what you consume. And think beyond the now when it comes to your health. You are in control the food you consume and don’t forget that.

    I”d have to say that eating raw food is the best health insurance. Eating crap is like playing Russian Roulette. Eventually you are going to lose. Most likely it’ll be what happens to your body near the end of your life.
