Detoxing is body’s way of eliminating poisons and by-products from everyday life. Whether it’s flour from a diet high in refined carbohydrates, heavy metals from exposure to environmental toxins, back-log of medication, or viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites or worms – all of this stuff needs to come out.
We naturally detox each day; however, in this high-stress, low-nutrition world that many of us live in, daily elimination is not enough. Many of our bodies are harboring poisons that weaken our immune systems and leave us susceptible to cancers, strokes, and even Alzheimer’s disease.
So, How Do You Begin to Detox?
First of all, it is important to note that merely deciding to eliminate sugars, preservatives, and fake foods (hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, and whatever Twinkies are made of), will allow your body to release some of these poisons.
Take a Close Look at Your Specific Needs
- What is your blood type? (Dr. Peter D’Adamo has written a book that describes foods that are beneficial and detrimental to each blood type)
- What are your cravings? (Sugar and carb cravings are a sign of yeast overgrowth)
- Do you take meds? (You should not go off prescription meds during your first detox, even if your intention is to eventually wean yourself from them)
- Are you frequently weak, dizzy, tired or in pain?
- Do you have a high stress job?
If you are craving sugar and carbs, then you need to eliminate them during a detox. This includes eliminating most fruits. Many cleansing diets suggest juice fasting. I’ve done these diets and have gotten really sick from them. Fruit contains natural sugar that can feed fungal and yeast overgrowth.
Depending on the extent of your cravings and body’s capability, you can decide how far you want to go with deleting carbs and fruits from your diet. When choosing fruits, go with the sour end of the spectrum like cranberry, lemon, lime, black currant, green apple and pineapple. Consuming fruit alone and on an empty stomach will aid in its digestion.
Furthermore, if pain, dizziness, illness or anxiety is abundant, I would not recommend going on a no-food cleanse. I would recommend eating less and only eating whole foods (nothing refined or processed). Blended soups (and raw soups) and smoothies are a great way of getting nutrition while lowering the stress on your digestive system.
Common Myths about Cleansing
- You can rid your body of all toxins within 3-5 days.
- Eating the raw diet is the best way to detox.
- When cleansing, you only need to focus on the colon.
- You should take many vitamin supplements during detox to ensure that you are getting full nutrition.
You can not put a time limit on your body’s need for cleansing. You can, however, begin with a 3-5 day cleanse in order to jump-start healing. But, depending on how toxic your system is, you may need to adopt a cleansing diet for much longer.
In the beginning of my own detox, I was too ill to eat raw food. I had to go with blended soups and broths. Once my system picked up, I was able to make a transition to a mostly raw diet.
The internet is full of cleansing ideas. And I’ve read most and tried many. Nothing helped me until I considered myself as an individual and came up with my own plan. Vitamins and other supplements inhibited my healing at first since they required extra work to digest.
Remember that if you are fairly toxic, you may not be getting the nutrients from food and supplements anyway. So, don’t be afraid to seriously limit your diet for a while. Resting the gut will give it time to heal.
Check out this diet. It has been used successfully for over 30 years as a means for detox. It is designed to last a few days. This is something that you may want to try after you body has gotten used to eating better and you are well rested and hydrated. Of course, you can modify it to fit your specific needs.
