Don’t be fooled! Yeast infections don’t just affect women. Candia albicans, the yeast-like microscopic organism to blame, can affect men and children too. It targets mucous membranes, and can be carried by the blood throughout the entire body. And antibiotics only make the problem worse. So let’s talk about how to cure yeast infections naturally.
Whether it’s a female yeast infection, athlete’s foot or diaper rash, a yeast infection comes about when the naturally occurring fungi get out of balance and multiply. Normally they live happily and quietly among us, but factors such as tight jeans can create the moist atmosphere they crave.
The widespread use of antibiotics has been thought to increase the rate of infections, as they kill off the “good” bacteria that keep the system in balance and the fungi in check. And some even believe that tampons have contributed too, as they help to create the right environment, so be aware.
Diet for Yeast Infections
What you eat, or don’t eat, significantly affects your health and susceptibility to illness. By watching a few things in your diet, you can help to eliminate, or prevent yeast infections altogether.
Since antibiotics cause such havoc on our bodies, try to stay away from them if you can, as well as meat from animals that have been fed large amounts of antibiotics. Yogurts and acidophilus should be added to the diet, as they will replace the friendly bacteria and help bring back balance. Eat plenty of leafy greens, alfalfa, strawberries and whole grains to restore the Vitamin K deficiency, also caused by the antibiotics.
Other foods good for curing and prevention of yeast infection include raw and whole foods, grains, broths, vegetables, lemons, grapefruits, unsweetened cranberry juice and garlic, a strong antifungal and blood cleaner. If nutritional deficiencies are suspected, Vitamins A and B6, zinc, magnesium and essential fatty acids can help. Eating well will help restore the acid and alkaline levels in the body.
Things to avoid are processed and refined foods, oranges, alcohol, and especially sugars, including fruit juices and honey. Yeast feeds on sugar, so keep it out of the diet as much as possible.
Remedies for Yeast Infections
There are three main methods to use herbs to help.
1. Attack from the inside.
This is done using pills or teas to clean the internal system and kill off the yeast. Goldenseal and Echinacea are both particularly effective here, and their antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal and immune boosting powers will also stabilize the overgrowth of the yeast. The vitamin B complex is suggested when taking goldenseal. Other good herbs are pau d’arco, garlic, black walnut powder and myrrh. Marshmallow and slippery elm bark will help soothe burning symptoms.
2. Bathe the affected areas.
Bathe the affected areas, thus putting the medicine right where it’s most needed, and to ease symptoms of itching and burning. You can use 1-3 drops of essential oils like clove oil, oil of oregano or tea tree oil to your bath, or 1 cup of apple cider vinegar. Calendula or thyme work too.
3. And specifically for women, douches.
1 ½ cups of white or apple cider vinegar makes a good douche, as well as calendula, aloe vera, tea tree oil, lavender oil, and the astringent uva ursi.
Most herbs are versatile and can be used in various ways, so find the right one for you, and get yourself back on the road to balance, recovery and prevention.
